Starting School at Westover Green

Children are admitted to school in the academic year in which they are five. Prospective parents are always warmly welcome should they wish to visit the school, in order to assess the opportunities provided for their children, and to meet the staff.

Parents/carers have the right to defer their child’s entry to school for a limited period of time, although legally a child must be accessing full time education from the beginning of the term following their fifth birthday.

In May, parents of children offered a place at Westover Green are invited to an evening meeting so that they can be introduced to all the staff that will be involved with their child.

Children are invited to come to school on various afternoons during the last half-term of the school year prior to them starting, to allow them to become more familiar with the teachers.

The children start school on a part-time basis in small groups according to their date of birth and in line with County policy. Their time at school is gradually increased to a full working day. Introducing children to school in this way enables us to spend much more time with individuals and establish good relationships.

Full-time schooling is much too demanding and tiring for four year olds, part-time to begin with, is the best way to start.

In-Year Admissions
To apply for a place at Westover Green during the school year you need to complete an Application for a School Place during the Academic Year form (for each child) and return it to us. You can get an In-Year School Application Form from your current school or download one by clicking on the link below

In-Year School Application Form

Please bear in mind that places can only be offered up to a maximum of half a term or six weeks in advance of when the place would be taken up.

We strongly recommend that you make at least one visit with your child prior to them starting. We like to have an honest conversation with parents so we can get to know your child/children understand any additional needs / safeguarding concerns and discuss how you can help support your child's learning, respect our high aspirations and expectations and become positive members of our lovely school community.

Please note at Westover Green we have a positive reputation for Special Educational Needs and also have an Autism Centre on site, but this does not mean that your child will automatically be entitled to additional adult support (this is often a misconception from some new parents). Each child's provision and needs are explored and supported accordingly, working within current systems and funding.

Once we have received your completed form, and providing we have available spaces, we will write to you and arrange a suitable starting date.

Our Planned Admission Number for each year group is 60.
