Homework

Please ensure that you spend time to do homework with your children but not do it for them :-) I really love looking at what your child has chosen to learn about and how creative they have been. Drawings, labelling, photographs, writing... all are welcome and celebrated. All I ask is that the children are proud of them and they have tried their very best. The children have been or will be learning about the topics covered in class so this is not new learning but to consolidate this independently.

The children's homework books were a delight to read over half term. I always love seeing how creative they are and the activities that the children choose to do. It is also reassuring to know that you as parents are supporting your children to achieve this too and helps to build the bridge between home and school. Just a gentle reminder that it is the children's writing we like to see and not the parents :-) .

This term we start our Amazing Animals topic.

Please continue to read everyday and practise Magic Maths with your child.

Thank you for all your hard work to make sure we all work together well.

World book day

The children had an incredible day dressing up as their favourite character and sharing their favourite stories. Children were able to recommend books to their friends and specifically enjoyed adding a leaf to our reading tree. Such an incredible day celebrating a love of reading.

Recycling

As part of Year One's "Eco Project", the children have been learning the importance of recycling. We went on a litter pick around the canal and were shocked at how much rubbish we collected in such a short space of time! Back In class we made some posters to promote recycling and to remind people to put their rubbish in the bin and look after our world.

School of Rock.

The children have learnt a recycling song (which hopefully they have been singing at home!). In groups they have created their own Eco band and made up their own 4 line verse thinking about rhythm and how many beats should be in each line of their verse. The children performed these to an audience using their musical instruments they made at home as part of their homework.

Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole

The children went back in time to 1854 to the Crimean battlefield and Scutari hospital as they acted out being Florence Nightingale, Mary Seacole and injured soldiers. The children have been exposed to real life artefacts, learnt about the different plants Mary used to make her herbal remedies and had a go at making their own ginger beer...this was a bit like 'Marmite'. Some of the children loved it, and others hated it as you can see from the photos below! Enjoy.

Wonderful Word Wednesday!

A huge thank you to all of the parents and carers that helped their children to create such incredible costumes. The children have had an amazing day learning lots of new words and in doing so are enhancing their vocabulary.

Below are just a few of the photos from today.

The Great fire of London.

We have began our topic of 'The Great fire of London' with a workshop from the Somerset heritage centre. The children had to work together to transport the buckets of water down the line just like the people of London did with the water from the Thames. They observed and handled different artefacts including a leather bucket and had a go at writing our names using ink and a quill. We all had a fantastic morning of learning.

P.E.

We have been very lucky this half term to have the P.E coach Mr Hammond working with us to teach us different skills and techniques. We have been learning how to aim at and hit a target, how to defend and attack in the form of 'collect the tag', and how to participate in sports in a professional manner.

Carnival time!

The children have had lots of fun designing, building and parading their carnival carts. This year we chose The Amazon Rainforest theme to link in with our South America topic and the carts were spectacular. So much effort, thought and hard work went into creating them and we thank you for the in school experiences this gave your children. They LOVED it!
